However, if the artist did not include the boat in the painting, then he would not be capturing the moment accurately. The boat is not there in the real world, it is actually in the mind of the boy. If a boy is thinking how much he wants a toy boat, that boat will also be in the painting as if it is right next to the boy. So the painting will portray things the video camera is able to capture but it will also portray, in a very realistic manner, things that a video camera could never catch. It will portray in a realistic manner what is in the minds of the subjects in the paintings. A magical realistic painting will go further much the way Latin American fiction goes further. Or, they could be reasonably realistic in much the same manner as realist art throughout the centuries. They could be ‘hyper-realistic’ in such a way that they look like a photographic. They would portray images that appear real. So what would paintings look like that could be called magical realism?įirst, the paintings would not be abstract. And it is described in a realistic manner. Realism means the topic is not treated romantically, wishfully, or etherally. No, for the magical realist everything is real and for that accident to truly be described accurately, everything in all three worlds must be carefully and accurately described.

The magical realist does not take the position that the physical world is real and the spiritual or mental worlds are somehow beyond real. The things in the physical, spiritual, and mental worlds are all treated equally by a magical realist. Why is it called “Realism”? Because everything being described is real and it is described in a realistic manner. Why is it called “Magical”? Because a Magical Realist describes everything in the spiritual world and in the psychological world that is in addition to the physical world. But the Magical Realist describes everything associated with the accident, not just the things a television camera might capture on tape. A Magical Realist will not only describe the accident that people can see but will also describe the events in the spiritual world that caused it as well as the thoughts and memories of the people in the car as the accident occurs.

If the driver had a memory just before the crash – say of an ancestor who was in buggy accident 100 years earlier – the literature would also describe that. It would describe the thoughts in the minds of the people in the car. If a book of fiction was describing a car crash, while a normal book would describe the interactions and conversations of the people in the car and the real world events that led to the accident, fiction written by a Magical Realist would describe not only those things but it would describe much more. It shows us what was going on in people’s minds and what was happening in the parts of the world we cannot see with our eyes.
